Innovative Practioner

Effective urban educators are Innovative Practitioners who can demonstrate the ability to problem solve, develop ideas, and use creative methods.

I am an Innovative Practitioner because I always try to incorporate their everyday lives into our curriculum. One thing I incorporated recently was the OREO method in our writing. I noticed a lot of them were eating Oreos for snack and remembered the OREO method that I had been taught when I was in elementary school. The OREO method helps students remember how to do opinion writing.

O- Opinion

R- Reasoning

E- Evidence

O- Opinion (restating)

Another way that I implement being an innovative practitioner is by making real world connections. They do this when we are reading. During all units, but especially during the fables unit, I make sure the students give real life examples of when they have experienced the lesson from the fable. Having them give those real life examples and making real world connections with our reading is important because they can relate more and will want to be more active and participate more in our group discussions. It will also help the material "stick" with them.
